Argentière Village

The traditional Savoyard village of Argentière is located near the head of the valley of Chamonix, at an altitude of 1252m (4101 ft.), and shares a ski pass with the rest of the Chamonix Valley. Sited at the foot of Les Grands Montets, Argentière has mountain village charm but is highly accessible, lying just over 9 kilometres from the town of Chamonix and only 15 minutes from the Swiss and Italian borders, making it a perfect base for exploring the area as well as the skiing; Lake Geneva is only an hour away and, by using the famous Mont Blanc tunnel, you can soon be sampling genuine Italian cuisine.

Not that it is necessary to go that far to sample good food, as the village has an abundance of good restaurants, bars and cafes to cater for all tastes. In Argentière apres-ski is generally low-key. The Office Bar on Rue Charlet Straton has long been a favoured British watering-hole because of it's internet access, it is usually full of Brits catching up on their emails; the food can be variable, the drinks tend to be pricey, you'll either love it or hate it! The nearby Stone Bar is also good, offering good italian food in a bar atmosphere with pool tables etc. A popular choice with the locals is La Cremerie on Chemin de la Glacière; they specialise in cheese-based dishes. And a reliable favourite is Le Dahu, also on Rue Charlet Straton, the largest restaurant in town, it has a good atmosphere and consistently good food. There is a non-smoking section.

There are also haute savoie delicatessens, plenty of shops, a supermarket and several ski hire facilities. One of the most convenient is Sanglard Sports, on Chemin de la Glacière just behind the Telepherique. They normally have the latest models and keep the equipment in very good condition as they have the most modern of automatic machines for preparation and sharpening.

The Post Office in Argentière centre is one place where you can change money, during banking hours Monday to Friday. Cash points in the centre of town are available and in Argentière this is one of the easiest ways to obtain Euros using a credit or debit card.
